Pa. man with long juvenile record sentenced to prison in shooting cases

WILLIAMSPORT – A Williamsport teen has been sentenced to 4 to 15 years in state prison for wounding a 14-year-old boy and shooting at a pizza delivery man’s vehicle in separate cases.

Lycoming County Judge Nancy L. Butts, Thursday went along with the plea agreement Thursday when she sentenced Nigel Christopher Staten-Chambers, 19.

He had pleaded guilty June 7 to a charge of aggravated assault in the juvenile’s shooting and to attempted robbery in the pizza delivery case.

The pizza delivery vehicle was struck three times in the 900 block of Market Street on Nov. 21, 2020, and the teen was shot two days later on a porch of a duplex in the 900 block of Penn Street.

When Staten-Chambers pleaded guilty he said he was gunning for another juvenile when he shot the 14-year-old in the leg by mistake.

First Assistant District Attorney Martin L. Wade defended the plea agreement and sentence, telling Butts a juvenile should be treated differently than a 30-year-old. Staten-Chambers was 17 when the crimes occurred.

The prosecutor also pointed out Staten-Chambers “took it on the chin” by refusing to provide information about associates.

In reviewing the pre-sentence report Butts noted Staten-Chambers has a lengthy juvenile record beginning at the age of 11 that included being adjudicated in 2017 on a robbery charge and in 2018 on terroristic threats, she said.

The judge also pointed out Staten-Chambers has had disciplinary issues at the county prison.

It was the opinion of the preparer of the pre-sentence report that he is a high risk to repeat his criminal activity, she noted.

Charges that included attempted homicide were dismissed as part of the plea agreement.
