The first trailer for Grey’s Anatomy Season 19 appears to be setting the stage for the conscious uncoupling of Meredith and Nick.
In the just-released promo above — which arrives two weeks ahead of the ABC medical drama’s Oct. 6 return — Scott Speedman’s Nick (back from Minnesota) announces, “It’s been six months.” Ellen Pompeo’s Mer, meanwhile, ominously adds, “It’s been a very difficult six months.”
Of course, the duo’s possible parting of the ways was essentially foreshadowed over the summer when news broke that Pompeo would be drastically scaling back her presence on Grey’s this season. According to sources, Pompeo is set to depart after roughly a half-dozen episodes, before turning up again next May for the Season 19 finale. (The actress will spend her time away from Grey Sloan producing and starring in an as-yet-untitled limited series for Hulu.)
Earlier this month, Pompeo assured fans that Grey’s is “going to be just fine without me,” adding. “I’m going to always be a part of that show. I’m an executive producer. I spent two decades of my career on [Grey’s] — it’s my heart and soul. I’ll never truly be gone as long as [it’s] on the air.”
To help fill the looming Meredith void, Grey’s is introducing a slew of rookies — all of whom are prominently featured in the above trailer. Also appearing in the video: Chandra Wilson’s Bailey, who tendered her resignation in the Season 18 finale. When asked about her surprise return, she responds, “I heard about the new class.”
Watch the trailer above and then hit the comments with your snappy judgements.

I don’t think that means they’re consciously uncoupled or aren’t together heading for a full breakup. It’s a misdirect. It’s a six month time jump, so it moreso sounds like Nick is saying “it’s been six months that you’ve stayed here to help fix things” and Mer is just saying those six months at Grey Sloan have been very difficult.
Let me guess….you were one of the people who begged for Speedman to come back on the show because of his “chemistry” with Pompeo. It’s been pretty evident that the two of them don’t really have much chemistry after all for many episodes. The last time sparks flew for Meredith was with Riggs, and then they screwed up that story line. They hyped up Hayes’s arrival by saying he was “Christina’s gift” to Mer, but then that went exactly no where either. Speedman is now a part of the cast, so there’s that. They need to give him a new love interest and leave Meredith alone. Why, exactly, does she need to have a man in her life?
Lol you are reading SO much into me just pointing out that the trailer isn’t definitively indicating they have or are breaking up. That is all. Has zero to do with whether or not I like them as a couple. And nowhere did I say anything about her “needing” a man. Calm down and maybe actually read my comment before going off on this tangent.
And actually, Speedman is no longer a series regular for season 19. He was for season 18 but is now a recurring character.
Totally agree!!!
Okay so the new kids ARE interns, not residents, like the OG gang way back in 2005. I feel like there has been thoroughly scrambled messaging on this point.
And that makes Schmidt their Bailey. Fun.
Interns are 1st year residents, so they use the terms interchangeably.
That’s what all the new groups have been – interns – which are also considered first year residents…
How is this rubbish still going?
ABC’s top-rated scripted series, No. 2 most-watched. –Mgmt.
While Im not bothered about Ellen Pompeo tAking a back seat in Greys. i am really upset that she chose to do it , finally having brought Nick Marsh back. Ive waited years for them to get together. I also have strong feelings about Ellen having pushed for a whopping sum of money and having gotten whats good for her, making her exit. It feels so self- involved and callous. Yes actors can leave if they want to, but her veiled threats have been front and center for years. Youd think the show was a punishment. The new Greys audiences have given her a real boost in her career
