The Kirksville City Council is scheduled to meet again on Monday to further discuss a request to rezone property for a new health care center.
On Wednesday of last week, the Kirksville Planning and Zoning Commission voted 6-2 against the request to rezone the land from residential to an extensive business district.
The land that is being requested to be rezoned is across the street from Leisure World Lanes on East Illinois Street and is made up of 240 acres and divided into three parcels.
Hannibal Regional Healthcare System is hoping to use the land to build a specialized health care center, which would make it the second health care center in Kirksville, joining Northeast Regional Medical Center.
During Monday's city council meeting, Northeast Regional CEO Tony Keene said the new addition would "siphon business" off the existing hospital.
We've attempted to contact Keene to discuss the concerns he has.
We've also contacted a spokesperson with Hannibal Regional to learn more about their proposal.
