On September 12th, the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service inspection program personnel were doing an inspection of Tyson in Waterloo when they noticed inhumane slaughter practices.

During the September 12 inspection, personnel observed noncompliance with Electric Prod/Alternative Object Use. According to the USDA report, live pigs were being moved from the loading area and three were observed as being left in the gondola; one dead, caught in the gondola by its snout, and two live; one trapped by its hind limb at the gondola entrance, the other with its head facing out.

PETA sent Rick Petersen, the facility manager for Tyson Fresh Meats Inc. slaughterhouse in Waterloo, a letter Wednesday, calling for him to set up a live stream from the slaughterhouse to help prevent more violations.

In a release from PETA, PETA Senior Vice President Daphna Nachminovitch says,

These disturbing reports show that pigs endured agonizing pain as they were mutilated by equipment and that another pig experienced the terror of being repeatedly shot in the head. PETA is calling on Tyson to publicly livestream its slaughter operations.

Along with the installation of the video cameras, PETA has asked that Peterson report all personnel that was involved in the incident to local law enforcement and reassign those people to positions that do not require contact with live animals.

U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety Inspection Service issued a notice of suspension to Tyson which was lifted the next day after Tyson presented the USDA with a compliance plan.
