CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Police in Joliet said they've discovered that more than two dozen people already charged with gun or drug crimes are now also suspected of fraudulently obtaining COVID relief aid.

Sergeant Dwayne English explained how a team of federal and local investigators found out that 23 men and two women had posed as owners of fake businesses to receive Payroll Protection Program loans.

English said in some cases, people being held in the Will County Jail on gun or drug charges were released after using PPP money to post bond. He said 15 of the people charged with PPP fraud are in custody, while 10 are at large.
