Fourth Consecutive Soccer Shutout for Dutch Women

A Mimi Pavelka goal five minutes into the second half was enough for the Central College women’s soccer team to secure a 1-0 win at Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.) Wednesday afternoon.

The Dutch (5-2-1) also held the Gusties (4-3-1) scoreless to notch a fourth shutout in as many tries. Gustavus Adolphus was a top-four team in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in 2021. Pavelka broke a scoreless tie when she corralled an Abby Frey corner kick and put the ball in the goal. It was another outstanding effort in goal by Sheila Horstmann as she made nine saves.

The Dutch return home for their final non-conference game of the season Saturday, hosting the University of Wisconsin-Platteville at 2 p.m.

Central Men’s Soccer Team Tripped Up by Carleton

A close game got away from the Central College men’s soccer team in the second half in a 2-0 loss at Carleton College (Minn.) Wednesday afternoon.

The Dutch (1-4-1) fell behind 1-0 in the first half against the Knights (3-3-1), before the home team went up 2-0 on a penalty kick in the second half. The Dutch have now suffered four losses in a row, getting outscored 7-0 in the streak.

The Dutch host the University of Wisconsin – Platteville at 4:30 p.m. Saturday.

Dutch Drop Conference Volleyball Opener

In its American Rivers Conference opener Wednesday, the Central College volleyball team fell in four sets against Buena Vista University, 17-25, 25-22, 25-19, 25-13.

The Dutch (3-7, 0-1 conference) played even with the Beavers (6-7, 1-1 conference) statistically, getting slightly edged 42-40 kills and 9-6 on service aces but committing 13 more errors than Buena Vista. Central had a pair of outside hitters with double-digit kills. Gracie Pierson had 15 and Gracie Daniels had 12. Amanda Smith had 23 assists. Ivett Flores and Elyse Johnson each had two service aces. Flores served as the libero and had 20 digs. Rachel Pella contributed three blocks.

Central has the weekend off before returning to the road next Tuesday for a match at Nebraska Wesleyan University at 6 p.m.

Grand View Beats Dutch Women’s Tennis Squad

Getting a group of players their first matches of the season, the Central College women’s tennis team dropped a 7-2 decision Wednesday afternoon to Grand View University.

Several Central (3-3) players made their season debuts against the Vikings (1-0), including all five singles players who competed. The closest match of the night belonged to Kalina Schubert at No. 5 singles who lost 6-3, 4-6, 1-0.

A handful of Dutch players are playing in the ITA Division III Midwest Regional in St. Peter, Minnesota this weekend. Jennifer Larson and Jenna Hernandez will play in the singles bracket. Larson will play with Madi Whalen, and Hernandez will play with Alex Griggs in doubles matches.

Central Maintains Cross Country Rankings

The Central College men’s and women’s cross country teams retained their positions in the USTFCCCA Division III regional rankings this week.

The Dutch women are #5 in the Midwest Region while the men are #6. American Rivers foe Wartburg College is #1 in both polls followed by North Central College (Ill.) in the men’s rankings and the University of Chicago in the women’s rankings.

Central was off last weekend but both squads head to Minneapolis for the Roy Griak Invitational Friday with the women’s race at noon and the men’s race at 12:45 p.m.
