PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Philadelphia police are investigating after an apparent argument led to a shooting outside a popular restaurant in Center City.

It happened around 7 p.m. Wednesday near the Shake Shack at 20th and Sansom streets.

Police say the 41-year-old man was shot once in the lower abdomen. He was taken to an area hospital where he was placed in guarded condition.

According to Philadelphia Police Captain John Walker, the victim, who appeared to be intoxicated, was walking southbound on 20th Street when he got into an argument with a driver in the nearby slow-moving traffic.

Walker said the argument escalated and the victim walked toward the silver car with two men inside.

A shot was then fired from one of the two men inside the car.

"He begins punching into the open window. Not sure if he strikes the person in the car but the person in the car fires at least one shot, striking him in the stomach," said Walker.

The victim fell to the street and the suspects drove off.

The victim was taken by police to Jefferson University Hospital where he underwent surgery. He is listed in guarded condition.

Police are searching for the two men who were inside the car.

"We are asking for the person who may have been involved in this altercation to please come forward and give your version of events so we understand what happened here today," said Walker.
