Colter Wall is BACK.
After two longs years since he released his 2020 Western Swing & Waltzes and Other Punchy Songs project, and him playing a few unreleased tunes and covers at live shows here and there, he dropped two new surprise songs this morning.
He teased that something was coming a few weeks ago, sharing a photo of himself putting in some work in the studio, and now, we at least now a little bit about what he was doing there.
After mostly living the cowboy dream up in Canada, ranching and living the life away from music, he found a little time to record a cover of Cowboy Jack Clement’s “Let’s All Help the Cowboys (Sing the Blues),” as well as an original tune “Cypress Hills and the Big Country.”
A solo write by Colter, “Cypress Hills and the Big Country” spotlights his native country of southwestern Saskatchewan, Canada.
He describes the vast imagery of his home out on the ranch, as he celebrates the prairie life and all the beauty that comes along with being able to “duck underneath all your trials and troubles for a time, like a pronghorn underneath a bottom wire.”
“Let’s All Help the Cowboys (Sing the Blues)” is a cover of a song originally written by Jack Clement, which Mr. Waylon Jennings made extremely popular when he included it on his iconic 1975 #1 Dreaming My Dreams album. It’s hard to do Waylon justice, but Colter nailed it and I can’t get enough of this one.
Colter’s gritty, rich vocals sound absolutely stellar on both tracks too, per the usual, and the fact that this likely points to even more new music on the way soon is the best news I’ve heard all week.
