A large fun-loving crowd showed up on Saturday morning to the Rotary Club of Mesquite annual fundraiser: the Mudd Volleyball Games.

The event was held, courtesy of Eureka Resorts, in the field next door to the Eureka Hotel. The lively music was provided by DJ’s Fu30 and Numba Juan.

There were 32 teams entered into the tournament. The teams came from the local valleys, St George, Las Vegas, and even Boulder City. Each year the supporters and spectators sections get larger and larger.
The highlight of the event is the annual playoff between Mesquite Police and Mesquite Fire and Rescue.

The winner gets the large trophy and bragging rights. With plenty of muddy water flying and a hard game, the Police Department team claimed the title for the second year in a row.

The teams are out for fun when the competition begins. Everyon has a good time and it does not seem competitive until they are down to the final team play-offs. Then the focus is more intense, the volleys get longer and everyone’s attention is on the game.

JMD Concrete took first place in the tournament. Heritage Electric took second place. Third place went to Cosmopolitan Dental took. Each winning team received a trophy and each member received a medal. The winning team received gifts courtesy of Danielle’s Chocolates and Jame Vaughn’s Mary Kay products.

New this year was “Best Team Costume” contest. This award went to the creative ladies at Fringe Salon. They had two volleyball teams all dressed as colorful minions with yellow shirts and blue pants with suspenders.
“We will be back next year,” said Danielle Serna, the Fringe team leader. “This is so fun,. But we may practice our volleyball beforehand.”

The “Pampered Pooches” won second place and The “Elks Lady’s” with their pink tutus took third place.

The Firefighters Association cooked hamburger and hotdogs for the crowd which was much larger than expected.

The event was designed to be a true family affair. The Rotary even made a shallow mud pool for the kids to play in during the tournament.
“I want to thank all of our volunteers, many that are not Rotarians and have stepped up to help,” said Event Coordinator Linda Gault. “It takes a lot of people to put on an event like this.”

Rotary Club of Mesquite President Roy Stephenson said, “I believe a good time was had by all participants, especially the little children that got to play in the mud. I want to thank the sponsors and participating teams as the money raised will go to the charities and projects in Mesquite.”
