ALAMOSA – The Alamosa High School softball team got back into the win column on Tuesday as it defeated Gunnison 12-2 at the Lee Field Complex.

“A win’s a win and we need it to get back on track,” said Alamosa coach Dominic Lomeli. “That’s what they want for us.”

The Cowboys drew first blood by scoring their only two runs of the game in the top of the first inning. Brooke Ricker led off with a single, and Nella Gardner reached on an error. Isabella Grown also was safe on an error allowing Ricker to score, and another error allowed Gardner to come home.

The Lady Mean Moose answered with five runs in their half of the inning. Amaya Garcia began things by getting on base on an error, and Kaycee Hillis drew a walk. Miranda Geringer also reached on an error, and Garcia scored on the play.

Darias Ramirez, who was courtesy-running for Hillis, tied the score as she came home on Lexi Heredia’s groundout. Addison McCarroll then gave Alamosa the lead as she doubled home Geringer.

Brooke Gonzales reached on an outfield error to bring home McCarroll. Alicia Rios singled home Gonzales to give Alamosa a 5-2 lead.

After neither team scored in the second, the Lady Mean Moose scored twice in the third. McCarroll led off with a triple, and she scored on Caitlyn Creel’s bunt single. Creel was out attempting to steal second, but Gonzales restarted the inning with another triple. Rios singled to drive home Gonzales for a 7-2 advantage.

Alamosa scored another run in the fourth. Heredia got on base on an error in the outfield, and after going to second on the error, she came home on McCarroll’s single.

The Lady Mean Moose finished off the game with a four-run fifth. Araceli Molina began the rally by getting hit by a pitch, and she scored on Garcia’s double. Hillis was safe on an error, and Garcia came home on the play. Geringer then singled, and Heredia was safe on an error, and Ramirez and Geringer both scored to end the game on the 10-run rule.

Shea Jordan went the distance and she was the winning pitcher. She allowed two runs and four hits, and she also struck out six, walked four, and hit two batters.

“She’s young and she’s only a sophomore,” Lomeli said. “She showed some flashes, but she does get herself into some trouble. It’s good for her to be able to work out of stuff like that. It will pay off over the next couple years.”

Alamosa had 11 hits and it was led by McCarroll who went 3-3 including a double, a triple and two RBIs. Rios went 2-3 with two RBIs.

Alamosa (6-8, 1-1 Tri-Peaks League) will host James Irwin on Thursday. The teams met earlier this season with the Lady Mean Moose taking a 19-7 win. That was a non-league game, but this time it will be a league contest.

“The league game is very important,” Lomeli said. “Last year we split. We won the non-league and we lost the league game. So we’re definitely looking to win the second game on Thursday.

First pitch at Lee Field is at 4 p.m.
