Coroner identifies driver killed in crash that left high school student injured in Anderson County
A crash on an Upstate highway Tuesday that killed an adult and left a high school student injured, officials said.
The crash happened just before 3:30 p.m. on state Highway 81 near Whit Chamblee Road, in Anderson County, according to Master Trooper James Miller with South Carolina Highway Patrol.
James M. McMahan, 74, of Iva, was the driver killed in the crash, according to Donald McCown with Anderson County Coroner's Office.
McMahan was driving his SUV south on SC 81 in the right lane when he attempted to turn left and was struck by a car traveling in the left lane, Miller said.
The impact caused McMahan's SUV to overturn and land in an open field, McCown.
According to McCown, McMahan died at the scene.
Dylan McCullough, with Anderson School District 3, said the injured person is a student at Crescent High School.
According to Miller, they were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The driver of the car was not injured, Miller said.
This is Anderson County’s 35th Traffic Fatality in 2022.
