According to the Minnesota Secretary of State, there are more than 500,000 Minnesotans who are eligible to register to vote. But for whatever reason, they have not registered.

Secretary of State Steve Simon will head to college campuses Tuesday to talk with students about the importance of registering to vote on National Voter Registration Day.

Early voting in Minnesota begins this Friday, September 23 and Election Day is November 8.

“There are a disproportionate number of folks, both who don't vote and who don't register, who are our youngest voters,” Simon explained. “And I would put an age range at about 18-29 years old, so it's a pretty big range.”

National Voter Registration Day is a nonpartisan civic holiday that was first observed in 2012. Nearly 4.7 million voters have registered to vote on the holiday to date.

According to U.S. Census data from 2020, as many as one in four eligible Americans are not registered to vote.

Traditionally, Minnesota has been a leading state for voter turnout. In 2020, Minnesota had easily the highest voter turnout rate in the country with 79.96% of eligible voters casting a ballot. Colorado and Maine were second and third at just over 76%.

Simon has been touting an effort to get 100% of Minnesota voters to the polls, and improve access for all voters, including people of color and other underrepresented groups.

You can register to vote in Minnesota on the Secretary of State's website here. Voters can also register at polling places on Election Day.
