Central Kentucky Homemakers’ Quilt Guild planning for the holiday season

FRANKFORT, Ky. (FOX 56) — It may be early, but the Central Kentucky Homemakers’ Quilt Guild is already looking ahead to the holiday season. Every year, the club partners with Meals on Wheels in Franklin County to hand out homemade stockings filled with food and other essential items. In the last year, requests for their stockings have quadrupled.

Before COVID-19, Meals on Wheels delivered about 50 meals a day to homebound seniors and fed about 50 more people at their center. The pandemic forced many seniors into lockdown, which upped the need for meal delivery. Even though restrictions have eased quite a bit, the need for their services hasn’t changed.

This Christmas, both groups need your help.

Meals on Wheels needs more volunteer drivers, and the Central Kentucky Homemakers’ Quilt Guild needs donations to stuff their homemade stockings.

“I would love to be able to meet the need of the Meals on Wheels program,” said Debbie Brown, President of the Central Kentucky Homemakers’ Quilt Guild. “But, I don’t want to worry about going broke stuffing the stockings.”

The club budgets $300 for its annual Christmas stocking drive. It’s enough money to fill 50 stockings, which members usually hand out. It’s not enough money to stuff 200 stockings, which they are looking to deliver this year.

“We are kind of a crazy group. We have lots of fabric in our stash and lots of passion for creating things. But it’s going to be a stretch,” said Brown.

Brown thinks with your help the stockings will have nicer presents. She also hopes this leads to future partnerships within the community.

The club is accepting donations until October 15th. Items need to be individually wrapped. The club is in search of toiletries, hair brushes, calendars, craft supplies, stamps, small games, gift cards, and holiday-themed gifts.

“Just to be able to say they were thought of at Christmas time, it’s tears,” said Marchelle Jenkins from Meals on Wheels. “It’s very humbling, and that to me is the true gift of Christmas.”

Donations can be dropped off at the Central Kentucky Homemakers’ Quilt Guild’s main office (101 Lakeview Court, Frankfort, KY 40601). Money can also be mailed there.

Members are already stitching stockings from their personal fabric collection. You can too.
