Henrico, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - Henrico County has begun the erection of the 109 100,000 pound tilt panels that will become the new Henrico Sports and Events Center. Construction began last year in Fairfield, on the site of the former Virginia Center Commons Mall. The new events center, set to be finished in 2023, will hold 12 basketball courts (which can become 24 volleyball courts) and a 4,500-seat arena that can be used for sporting events, concerts, and high school graduations.

Board of Supervisor Vice Chairman and Fairfield District Supervisor Frank Thornton emphasized how long this project has been in the works, and expressed his excitement at the facility's progress. Brookland District Supervisor Dan Schmitt says that the indoor events center will round out Henrico County's already robust set of outdoor athletic facilities and bring further tourism to the area.

The process of putting up the panels will take roughly two weeks, and the Events Center is set to be complete in September of next year.
