Two fatalities in residential structure fire

KNOXVILLE -- At 3:23 am today, the Knoxville Fire Department (KFD) responded to 2224 Mississippi Avenue for a house fire. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered that two individuals were trapped in the home. During rescue efforts, KFD quickly located a 67-year-old male and a 3-year-old male within the residence. AMR transported both to local hospitals in serious condition.

"The Knoxville Fire Department is saddened to learn that both have succumbed to their injuries as a result of this morning's fire. Our prayers and condolences are with the family during this difficult time," a spokesman said.

Knoxville Fire Department investigators are working to determine a cause. However, foul play is not considered a factor in the cause of the fire at this time.
