The governor of California paid for billboards along Oklahoma’s busiest roads.
"Need an abortion? California is ready to help." Oklahomans will soon see that on billboards along Oklahoma’s busiest roads, and the billboards were paid for by California’s governor.
The advertisement will soon be seen on roadways in Oklahoma. The billboard reads, "Need an abortion? California is ready to help" and also lists a website that describes how and where you can get the procedure within the state.
"It has the feel of a political stunt, you know we're so used to politicians using speeches on the campaign stump, Twitter or TikTok, in this day age to get a message across, there’s something about using a billboard that has a retro feel to it," said professor Tyler Johnson, OU political science.
The ads are paid for by Gov. Gavin Newsom’s re-election campaign. Newsom notified Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt of the billboards through Twitter.
KOCO 5 asked if something like this could help bolster Stitt’s campaign.
"There's sort of a double-edged sword, there are ways that this could be positive for Gov. Stitt, if he wants to come out and talk about this it makes him look like a fighter, makes him look like he's protecting the state, but it also elevates abortion into the conversation in a way that Republicans aren't necessarily looking to have," Johnson said.
Johnson said it’s likely one of Newsom’s main goals, to get more exposure for a possible presidential run.
There is no word yet on when and where the billboards will go up.
