Handgun found in kindergartener's backpack in Greenwood, Arkansas

A handgun was found in the backpack of a kindergartener in Greenwood Friday, the district reported.

As teachers were getting ready for dismissal, a kindergarten student at East Pointe Elementary told a teacher there were "several tools" in the student's backpack.

The teacher found an unloaded handgun inside the backpack, the district reported on social media.

There were no threats or other students involved in the incident, according to the district.

"Thank you to the Greenwood Police Department and our school resource officer for their quick response and assistance in this matter. The safety of our students is a top priority for our school district and we commend our staff and administration for their actions today as well," the district reported. The district did not release further information Friday.
