The Dunk officially becomes the AMP

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — The Dunkin’ Donuts Center officially has a new name.

Dunkin’ Donuts held the naming rights to the downtown Civic Center for more than two decades, with Rhode Islanders commonly referring to it as “The Dunk.”

On Wednesday, a ceremony was held to rename the venue the Amica Mutual Pavilion — or The AMP.

Mayor Jorge Elorza, Providence College men’s basketball coach Ed Cooley, Providence Bruins coach Ryan Mougenel and incoming Amica CEO Ted Shallcross were on hand for the event.

“I look forward to not only building new experiences for the next generation, but also making sure that this corporate name, this name of a very deeply invested corporate partner continues to shine in our state,” Elorza said.

Target 12 first reported in August that Amica won a competitive bidding process to win the naming rights for the venue.

The Rhode Island Convention Center Authority and Lincoln-based insurance company Amica announced the 10-year deal for the facility’s naming rights back in September. Amica will pay $900,000 annually as part of the deal.

Amica, founded in Providence 115 years ago, said they are honored to add their name to the historic venue.

“This is home for us,” Cooley said. “Amica thank you. Thank you so much. Your name is going to be on national television every single time the Friars step out there as this is one of the most competitive, hardest places in America to play.”
