Michigan State Police

ONTONAGON TOWNSHIP, MI— Michigan State Police are looking for a missing Ontonagon County man.

Thursday around 10 a.m. troopers were dispatched to an area near 13820 Lakeshore Drive in Ontonagon Township on a report for a missing 58-year-old resident.

Joseph Bittner was last seen by his family Wednesday around 9:30 a.m. at his home. He left on his 4-wheeler to do some work on a camp on Lakeshore Drive but didn’t return the following day. Authorities found the 4-wheeler near the driveway leading to 13820 Lakeshore Drive.

MSP canine teams from the Iron Mountain and Gladstone posts were called in to search, along with the Houghton County Search and Rescue team. Drones were deployed, but no planes or helicopters could respond because of bad weather conditions.

The search the paused around 10 Thursday night when the dogs and search teams couldn’t find any sign of Bittner. It resumed Friday. Again, no aviation could respond because of weather conditions.

Bittner is reported to have a medical condition and requires medication. It’s unknown if he has any of his medication with him.

He was last seen wearing jeans and a dark shirt.

Anyone with information regarding Bittner’s whereabouts is asked to call 911.
