South Asian New York Fashion Week (SANYFW) is set to begin today, September 8. Here's everything you need to know about the monumental event!
Ever since its inception in the mid 1900s, New York Fashion Week has seen a plethora of innovations that has kept this annual moment in the fashion zeitgeist advancing with the times. As hemlines fell and rose alongside the economic standing of the city and street style began its reign to completely change the way fashion is disseminated to the world, NYFW has long been evolving to keep up with what matters most across the globe. The latest initiative coming out of NYFW in 2022 is the official launch of the city’s first ever SANYFW.
Developed by fashion entrepreneur Shipra Sharma in partnership with Hetal Patel, SANYFW seeks to uplift South Asian fashion that is inspired by both traditional and modern South Asian culture. "Lehengas turned into co-ord sets. Sarees turned into gowns with drapes. Palazzo pants became wide legged pants. We want to reclaim that narrative and introduce the world to the origins of these silhouettes and designs,” said Founder and CEO Sharma during the SANYFW Summer Kick-Off event. ”At SANYFW, we intend to highlight and share the history of our fashion and culture, while celebrating the fashion pioneers who have been trailblazers for our community universally.”
Taking place during the official Spring/Summer 2022 New York Fashion Week calendar, the week-long experience will be hosted at a variety of iconic Manhattan venues and will feature headlining shows from internationally recognized designers Nomi Ansari and Mayyur Girotra. Enthusiasts of South Asian style and fashion will also have access to runway shows featuring a wide variety of design categories like streetwear, menswear, bridal wear, and beyond. In addition to the runway shows themselves, SANYFW is also offering a marketplace of South Asian vendors as well as a health and wellness pop-up that will share knowledge surrounding yoga and ayurvedic learning.
