Maggie Lay
Maggie Lay, 92, of Breckenridge, passed away at her residence on Monday, September 5, 2022. Her funeral service will begin at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 10, 2022, in the Melton-Kitchens Chapel of Memories, with John Kinman and Otho Noggle officiating. She will be laid to rest in the Veale Creek Cemetery immediately following the funeral service. Her family will welcome friends for a visitation at the funeral home on Friday, September 9, 2022, from 6:00-7:00 p.m.
Maggie Fay Dooley was born in the Tonk Valley area of Young County on February 5, 1930, to parents Clarence Dooley and Lela (Stringer) Dooley. In her early adult years, Maggie was an avid crocheter. Later in life, her passion shifted to jigsaw puzzles. In November 1995, she married David Lay. One room of their house was dedicated to their love of puzzles: an unfinished puzzle sits on the table while more than 15 other completed puzzles adorn the room’s walls. When not working on a puzzle, you could find Maggie spending time being around her grandkids – almost always with a Dr Pepper in her hand.
Maggie served as the food service manager for the Breckenridge Independent School District for 14 years. She then took up that role at Stephens Memorial Hospital – a role she had for another five years. And when her time as an employee at SMH came to an end, she served as a Pink Lady (volunteer) in the hospital’s auxiliary. Outside of puzzles and work, Maggie and David would hop in the car from time to time, turn up one of their favorite CDs, and just hit the open road for a drive. Most of the time, these were short distances within the county, but every now and then, they would make their way up toward Wichita Falls before deciding to turn around and head back home.
Maggie was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Lela; her first husband, Walter Pittman; two sisters, Anna Lou McKee and Elsie Thomas; and one brother, Bob Dooley. She is survived by her husband of almost 27 years, David; two sons, James Pittman and wife Shirley, and Bobby Pittman; two brothers, Earl Dooley and Alex Dooley; along with 36 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, two brothers-in-law, three sisters-in-law, as well as a whole host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Maggie’s name can be made to either St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or Shriners Hospital for Children. Donations can be left at or mailed to Melton-Kitchens Funeral Home. Condolences can be made online at meltonkitchens.com.
