AUSTIN (Talk1370.com) -- Two people are dead after a crash involving a large truck and two other vehicles in downtown Austin during the Tuesday morning commute, officials said.
First responders say the crash happened just after 8:30 a.m. along the southbound mainlanes of Interstate 35 near Cesar Chavez Street. Those mainlanes remained closed for nearly five hours, finally re-opening just after 1:30 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.
Southbound traffic was being diverted to the frontage road at 6th Street, officials said.
Austin-Travis County EMS said the driver of the truck was pinned in their vehicle and required extrication. That driver was successfully extricated and transported to Dell Seton Medical Center with a trauma alert and potentially serious injuries, according to ATCEMS.
Two victims from the smaller vehicles were pronounced deceased on the scene. A third vehicle was also involved in the crash, officials said. Medics said a fourth patient was also evaluated and transported to Dell Seton with minor injuries.
