Frederick Steffen, 74, of Milwaukee, has been identified as the driver who was killed on I-43 on Thursday afternoon after a dump truck crashed into his 1974 Triumph coupe. That's according to the report from the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office. The report also states that the Triumph was stalled out in the far right eastbound lane of I-43 before the dump truck ran over the coupe, crushing it at a high rate of speed.Steffen's wife, Carol, also told the investigator in the report that the Triumph had "not been working for the last few years" and Steffen had taken it to a repair shop. The report states the auto repair shop said there was something wrong with the starter. The car was fixed and Carol had dropped her husband off at the auto repair shop to pick it up. He was killed while driving the car back home. The Greenfield Fire Department responded to the crash Thursday. Lt. Brian Krueger said pulling over and putting hazards on is ideal in a scary situation like this, but it's not always an option. "If you are on the expressway, they recommend staying in the vehicles, but obviously, if it makes more sense to get yourself out of the vehicle because of the positioning you're in like if you're in a known blind spot, cars are coming around a bend or something like that, remove yourself from that vehicle but get yourself to a safe place," he said. It's unclear how much time Steffen had to react to his car stalling. The driver of the dump truck has not been identified. The Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office says they are still investigating the crash.
