Hofstra Pulls Out Win Over FDU In Season Opener

Hempstead, NY - Ellen Halseth scored with 2:19 remaining to snap a 2-2 tie and lift Hofstra to a 3-2 win over Fairleigh Dickinson Thursday night at Hofstra Soccer Stadium in the season opener for both teams.

The Pride moved to 1-0 on the season while the Knights dropped to 0-1. The win was Hofstra's fifth win in a row in season-openers.

The Pride got a goal and three assists from freshmen as Thorhildur Thorhallsdottir notched a goal and an assist, and Dagny Run Petursdottir and Eila Wennerholm each had an assist. Thorhallsdottir opened the scoring in the 18th minute with a goal as she took a pass from Petursdottir and put a shot past FDU keeper Malene Nielsen.

The score remained that way until the 70th minute when Aitana Martinez-Montoya tied the game after getting past Hofstra keeper Skylar Kuzmich for an uncontested shot. The Pride answered six minutes later as senior Anja Suttner knocked in a loose ball in front of the goal following a corner kick. The Knights would not quit as Lea Egner sent a corner kick into the box that was put home by Kiomy Luperon in the 83rd minute.

That set the stage for Halseth to play the hero. Hofstra's top returning goal scorer, the senior forward headed in a chest pass from Wennerholm following a corner kick from Thorhallsdottir in the 88th minute.

Kuzmich did not record a save in the game, while Nielsen had nine saves for the Knights.

Hofstra is back in action August 26 at Yale with a 4 p.m. start time.
