JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) - When the state’s Department of Public Safety remained silent on the details of a shooting involving a Capitol Police officer, 3 On Your Side filed a public records request to get the information that -- by law -- that agency must provide.

The redacted incident report, provided by DPS’ legal department, identified 30-year-old Sinatra Rakim Jordan as the person now charged with a litany of crimes after apparently trying to leave during a traffic stop.

On August 14, Capitol Police Capt. Michael Maldonado requested assistance from the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation for an officer-involved shooting, which took place after “police response to a traffic stop in Hinds County,” the short summary reads.

MBI, the lead agency in the case, listed on the report that Jordan is charged with disregard for traffic device, careless driving, driving while license suspended, and felony fleeing.

The document indicates Jordan had a 38-year-old female passenger in the vehicle, but officials redacted her name.

It is not clear if Jordan or the female passenger was the one shot by Capitol Police.

DPS has yet to provide any other information about the incident, including the extent of injuries or condition of the individual shot.

When contacted Thursday, DPS spokesperson Bailey Martin directed reporters to file a records request for that information, which we did.
