Kretzschy’s Cajun BBQ was started by a Michigan native-turned-Texas resident with an affinity for Louisiana cuisine.

“I get asked 20 times a day, ‘Who’s the Cajun?’ But my dad, he visited Louisiana a bunch,” said Brandon Kretzschmer, one of the restaurant’s owners.

Kretzschmer’s father, Steve, opened Kretzschy’s in Lewisville in August 2020. The locally owned, family-operated restaurant is owned by Steve and his two sons, Brandon and Andrew.

Kretzschy’s merges Louisiana Cajun flavors with Texas barbecue. Its menu features large portions of its offerings, including smoked meats, burgers, po’boys and Tex-Mex as a few of the featured dishes. The restaurant uses Cajun seasoning in its rubs to achieve the fusion flavor.

“Everything’s made in house; everything’s made from scratch,” Kretzschmer said. “We trim our own meat, smoke our own meat [and] hand-cut the fries. It’s made with love.”

The business’ origin story goes back to Kretzschmer’s college days, when he participated in a local cheeseburger festival in Michigan. Looking to make some money, he opened up a small shack and cooked burgers with his dad. The smoked burgers grew in popularity, which led to the opening of Kretzschy’s Smokey BBQ in Michigan in 2018.

Kretzschmer named Kretzschy’s catfish and brisket as the most popular items. The smoked shaved brisket is rubbed with the restaurant’s secret Cajun dry rub and slowly smoked for 12-14 hours over hardwood oak.

As a burger connoisseur, Kretzschmer’s personal favorites are the classic cheeseburgers and the catfish.

“That’s where it all started from,” he said. “We do ours different because we smoke them.”

Kretzschmer said he hopes to acquire a Kretzschy’s Cajun BBQ food truck someday and is eyeing expanding to Denton. With so many barbecue and Cajun cuisine spots in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, Kretzschmer said what makes Kretzschy’s different from the others is the love he puts into the food.

“I like people to be happy with food,” he said. “That’s my passion.”
