My 8-year-old daughter broke her arm this summer.
It was a drag for her being in a cast while all the other kids were swimming, of course, but one bright spot during the ordeal was the wonderful care she received over at Mott Children’s Hospital. The nurses there were amazing.
I would have never known they’ve been engaged in a bitter labor dispute.
The nurses in the entire university health care system, Michigan Medicine, have been working without a contract since March. The nurses claim they’re overloaded with too many patients. (Sorry if we added to the workload! I told my kid to be more careful on bunk bed ladders next time.)
The bargaining process got real this week when the nurses slapped the university’s health system with a lawsuit, Marty Slagter reported. It’s just the latest union news coming out the university, where library workers recently scored a success with a 17 percent pay hike.
There are also some workplace issues going on over at the Ypsilanti Police Department, where within the last week, Chief Tony DeGiusti resigned, along with five other officers in the department, Nathan Clark reported. The officers left due to low morale, according to officials, and the department is currently short 21 percent of its uniformed police force.
In other news, our multimedia journalist Jake Hamilton was recently at the demolition of University of Michigan’s Fleming Administration Building, where he captured some amazing pictures and video (above, below).
Those were some of the biggest stories of the week here in the Ann Arbor newsroom. We’ve compiled those headlines for you, and some others, below.
