Artist Spotlight: George Hancin

Worcester Magazine
"Codman House Barn," oil on board, 16” x 24”

Writes George Hancin: "For many years I have been concentrating on urban, suburban, and rural landscape painting. I have been exploring how light, shadow, time, and seasons describe a place and set mood. I am interested in how architecture, cars, and street signs interact with the natural environment. Commonplace neighborhoods and the subtle strangeness they evoke are fascinating. The way light cascades across a lawn, the shape of a shadow, the color on the back of a mailbox. It’s these moments I try to capture in my paintings

"I completed an Art Ed degree at Kent State in the '70s, a painting degree at the Museum School, and a Masters at Yale in the '80s. Throughout the '90s I was a member of the Bromfield Gallery and had several solo shows there. I was also in group shows at Georgia Tech, the Babcock Gallery and the Amos Enos Gallery in NYC. More recently I've been in group shows at the Southborough Art Center, Montserrat Art School, ArtsWorcester, and the Sprinkler Factory.

"From 1988 I've been teaching adult ed art class at the Worcester Art Museum and the Boston MFA, but most of my energy was devoted to teaching high school art. From 1994 to 2019 I worked at Algonquin Regional, in Northborough. Over those years I taught everything from Art I to AP Art, Ceramics I to advanced, organized art exhibits, and helped at Art All State, built sets for play productions, and helped with drama festivals. It was a very enjoyable and fulfilling career; working with hundreds of talented, energetic teens was a great experience. Now I am retired and happily putting my full attention back into painting."
