An Oklahoma mother has been arrested in connection with her baby’s death, accused of refusing to get him medical attention.
State investigators are recommending second-degree murder charges against her. Court documents detail how the child battled illness for months without receiving the care he needed. They also detail how friends and family begged his mother to get the infant help to save his life.
“Makes me feel like that little boy got ignored in a bassinet by the one person that was supposed to protect him,” said a woman who asked to not be identified but is connected to the mother’s ex-boyfriend.
That mother allegedly failed her 14-month-old son, who had been born prematurely, to follow up doctor visits and the hospital, knowing his health history.
People in her life noticed breathing problems and urged her to get help.
A doctor diagnosed the child with a cough and allergic rhinitis, and possible exposure to COVID-19, but investigators said she never followed up after that.
“When I contacted the detective, my first question was, is there any way to validate whether or not these two children actually saw the doctor in the last three weeks, because they were supposedly twice?” the woman said.
The detective contacted the Oklahoma Department of Human Services and the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation to look into the child’s death.
“There had been enough texts and Snaps to me that 30 days prior to this, with concern for his medical condition and him not going,” she said.
DHS said the mother lied about taking the infant to get medical attention, saying she didn’t like hospitals.
She also allegedly admitted to OSBI that she believes the child would’ve lived had she taken him to the hospital and called herself stupid and ignorant for not letting others take him to the hospital.
At the time of the child’s death, a minor was babysitting the two young children when the person noticed that the infant wasn’t breathing.
When the infant arrived at Alliance Health Woodward, medical staff tried reviving him, but it was too late.
"I think that little boy has waited seven months and in that seven months, he’s probably looked up out of his bassinet and waited for his mom to pick him up or take him to the doctor. He's waited seven months,” the woman said.
OSBI said they can’t comment on the case until the district attorney files charges.
