With anglers casting their lines for salmon and tuna, they're leaving more Pacific Halibut behind.
Now, the state halibut fisheries are making changes.
This is happening at the fisheries near Port Orford and Brookings.
The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife is bumping up the daily bag limit to two.
Normally the season starts with a one-bag limit, and you can usually only catch six halibut for the entire year.
"To provide anglers additional opportunities, we were able to increase the daily bag limit to two fish per angler starting September 1," said project leader Lynn Mattes. "This way anglers might be able to double their halibut catch on any given day. The two fish bag limit also applies to the southern Oregon sub area Brookings and Gold Beach. That fishery was already seven days a week, but now that area can also be two fish per day."
ODFW says anglers have to immediately tag any halibut they catch.
