GOOD EVENING IM ERIN CLARK... AND IM DAN GREEN... WE BEGIN TONIGHT.. WITH A DEADLY POLICE SHOOTING IN SALINAS. IT HAPPENED AROUND 10-THIRTY ON CRESCENT WAY.. ON THE CITY'S NORTHSIDE THAT'S WHERE POLICE RESPONDED TO A STABBING... AND ENDED UP SHOOTING THE SUSPECT AFTER HE CONFRONTED OFFICERS.. AND NOW THE CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE HAVE TAKEN OVER THE INVESTIGATION.. WITH MORE ON THE INVESTIGATION WE GO LIVE TO ACTION NEWS 8 REPORTER FELIX CORTEZ ....### DAN/ERIN... THE DOJ TAKING OVER THIS INVESTIGATION IN LARGE PART TO A NEW LAW THAT WENT INTO EFFECT LAST YEAR.. (NAT POP SHOOTING) THAT'S THE SOUND OF SALINAS POLICE SHOOTING AND KILLING A SUSPECT WHO HAD ALLEGEDLY JUST STABBED A FRIEND ON THE 200 BLOCK OF CRESCENT WAY IN NORTH SALINAS.. WITNESSES REPORT HEARING MORE THAN A DOZEN SHOTS... THESE YELLOW STICKERS MARK WHERE AT LEAST 8 OF THEM STRUCK THE HOUSE WHERE THE STABBING HAPPENED... THE PERSON WHO LIVES HERE TOLD ACTION NEWS HE WAS STABBED BY A FRIEND WHO CAME UNANNOUNCED LOOKING FOR MONEY.. THE VICTIM SAYS HE RAN NEXT DOOR WHERE FRIENDS CALLED 911.. WHEN POLICE ARRIVED THEY SAID THEY WERE CONFRONTED BY THE SUSPECT AND OPENED FIRE.. THE VICTIM SAYS THE SUSPECT WAS CARRYING A REPLICA STYLE MACHINE GUN WHEN HE WAS SHOT.. STANDARD PROTOCOL IS THE DISTRICT ATTORNEY'S INVESTIGATE POLICE SHOOTINGS BUT THEY CALLED OUT INVESTIGATORS WITH THE CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE WHO THEN MADE THE CALL TO TAKE OVER THIS INVESTIGATION.. (GRAPHIC IN UNDER A NEW CALIFORNIA LAW THAT WENT INTO EFFECT A YEAR AGO THIS MONTH.. THE CALIFORNIA D-O-J IS REQUIRED TO INVESTIGATE ALL INCIDENTS OF AN OFFICER INVOLVED SHOOTING RESULTING IN THE DEATH OF AN UNARMED CIVILIAN.. GRAPHIC OUT) THE LAW ALSO APPLIES TO SHOOTINGS INVOLVING REPLICA FIREARMS.. LAST NIGHTS' SHOOTING IS THE FIRST OFFICER INVOLVED SHOOTING HERE IN MONTEREY COUNTY THAT DOJ HAS TAKEN OVER SINCE THAT NEW LAW WENT INTO EFFECT.. WE'RE TOLD THAT FOUR SALINAS POLICE OFFICERS HAVE BEEN PLACED ON ADMINSTRATIVE LEAVE.

The California Department of Justice has identified the Salinas police officers who shot and killed a man on the night of July 13. Officials identified Curtis Dale Barnett as the decedent a week after the deadly shooting. More than a month later, the agency has identified Gabriel Garcia, Alejandro Jimenez, Eduardo Bejarano, and Jordy Urrutia as the officers who killed him. Police shot and killed Barnett after responding to a stabbing in the area of Crescent Way and N. First Street.According to police, when they arrived, Barnett ran into a neighbor's home and came out holding a BB gun that looked like a Tommy gun, the victim said. Police shot and killed Barnett when he pulled out the BB gun.In a video shared with KSBW 8 by a neighbor, at least a dozen shots can be heard being fired by law enforcement.
