Eight officers were injured at Auburn Correctional Facility on August 10 after two inmates provoked an attack, the New York State Police Benevolent Association said.
In a release, the association said two officers were escorting a disruptive inmate from the facility mess hall when the 31-year-old inmate suddenly turned around and punched an officer several times. Several officers broke up the attack, forcing the rogue inmate to the wall, then the ground.
At the same time, a 33-year-old inmate shouted aggressively and attempted to attack the officers involved. The second inmate stabbed an officer who was trying to hold him back. During both attacks, 15 inmates made threats against staff before they were returned to their cells.
Both inmates have been transferred to the Five Points Correctional Facility. After the attack, correctional facility staff found a sharp make-shift weapon while searching the inmates' cells.
Six officers were treated for injuries at Auburn Community Hospital. The first officer attacked suffered a broken nose. One officer suffered a concussion and a bite on the knee, and another officer suffered a puncture wound.
