Madison man sentenced to federal prison on narcotics charges

MADISON, Wis. — A Madison man will spend six and a half years in prison after being convicted on drug and gun charges.

Chaz E. Morris, 35, was sentenced to federal prison Wednesday after previously being convicted of possessing more than 40 grams of fentanyl with the intent to distribute and having a gun after previously being convicted of a felony. Morris pleaded guilty to the charges on May 20, 2022.

His prison term will be followed by four years of supervised release.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office says undercover officers from the Dane County Narcotics Task Force bought crack cocaine from Morris’ co-defendant, Myron Macon, on five occasions in January and February of 2021, with Morris personally delivering the drug during one of the buys.

In March 2021, authorities executed a search warrant on two homes that were leased to Morris and his co-defendant using fake names. At Morris’ home, officers allegedly found 718 grams of cocaine, 49 grams of fentanyl, 101 grams of heroin, 2,297 grams of marijuana and $4,950 in cash, including money that was from the undercover officers. Macon was arrested after the search of his home.

Despite the arrest of his co-defendant, Morris allegedly continued to sell drugs, including selling drugs to undercover officers four additional times in August and September of 2021. Another search warrant was executed at Morris’ new home in Madison on September 9. Police said Morris threw a gun onto the street from a second-floor balcony after they had knocked on the front door. The loaded gun was reported stolen out of Texas and had Morris’ DNA on it.

During the second search, authorities reported finding 78 grams of fentanyl, 83 grams of cocaine, 27 grams of methamphetamine, 31 grams of marijuana, and $11,914 in cash — which again included money paid by undercover officers. Morris was arrested at the home after the search.

Macon also pleaded guilty to drug charges and is scheduled to be sentenced on September 27.
