Sheriff: lighting needed at prison complex

The Carbon County sheriff has some concerns over lighting at the correctional facility.

On Wednesday, Sheriff Daniel Ziegler told the prison board that a lighting issue over the weekend shed light on a lighting problem at the Broad Mountain complex.

He commended the prison maintenance staff for fixing the lighting in a timely manner, but noted that because of this issue, it showed that more lighting at the complex, which houses the prison, dog shelter, Emergency Management Agency and the nearly finished Emergency Training and Operations Center, is needed.

“When you’re turning off of (Route) 93 onto the road (leading into the complex), there is no lighting to go at all down that road,” Ziegler said. “I think it’d be an issue at the first left that will go to the training center.”

Ziegler also said that he has a concern that there are no checks, such as a guard stand, to get onto the prison property.

“You look at other correctional facilities, there’s a guard booth and a gate that regulates people coming in,” he said, noting that this may be a goal for a three- to five-year strategic plan.

He added that this area is really an unsecured area.

Commissioner Rocky Ahner agreed about needing to look at better securing the site.

He noted that some hunters use the parking lot to park their car before going hunting, which he doesn’t think is a good idea.

Ahner said that he hopes to have a meeting about the lighting and security in the near future to make a plan to address Ziegler’s concerns.

“It might not happen now, but at least we can have something together,” he said.

The board spoke about putting signs stating that unauthorized parking is not permitted.

Warden James Youngkin said that the prison has been dealing with hunters since the prison opened nearly 30 years ago.
