Two COVID-related deaths have been reported in Athens County, along with 171 new cases for Aug. 12-18

ATHENS, Ohio (WOUB) — Athens County has now had 149 total deaths related to COVID-19 since the beginning of the pandemic after two were added to the total Thursday. The county also has now had had 17,110 total cases of COVID-19 since the beginning of the pandemic after 171 additional cases were reported since last week’s update.

The Ohio Department of Health confirmed the numbers on Aug. 18, 2022.

Analysis of ODH data indicates the deaths involved a person in their 50s and a person aged 80 or older.

The cases involved 29 people 0-19, 29 people 50-59, 28 people 20-29, 26 people 40-49, 23 people 30-39, 21 people 60-69, eight people 70-79 and seven people 80+.

One previously confirmed case required hospitalization for a person in their 60s. According to the data, 363 people in Athens County have been hospitalized due to complications related to this coronavirus since the start of the pandemic.

There are 489 known active cases in the county as of Thursday and 16,472 recovered cases, according to ODH.

A total of 53.18% of the county has started the vaccination process and 49.56% has completed it, according to ODH. There have also been 18,191 first boosters and 4,444 second boosters administered.

Anyone experiencing respiratory symptoms is asked to call their primary care physician, urgent care, or emergency department before arriving for care to let them know that they believe they are experiencing symptoms related to COVID-19 virus.

Thursday at 2 p.m., the Ohio Department of Health announced 24,067 confirmed and probable cases of COVID-19 statewide were reported since last week’s update. There were also 665 hospitalizations, 36 ICU admissions and 90 deaths reported in the same time period.

ODH makes the following recommendations to protect yourself from illness:

• Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds; dry hands with a clean towel or air dry hands.
• Use alcohol-based hand sanitizer when soap and water are unavailable.
• Cover your mouth with a tissue or sleeve when sneezing or coughing. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands.
• Stay home when you are sick.
• Avoid contact with people who are sick.
