Columbus County Schools will begin the 2022–2023 year with an estimated 5,086 students, according to figures from the state Department of Public Instruction, according to Superintendent Deanne Meadows. That’s about 300 fewer than three years ago, but higher than the 4,900 DPI predicted for this point.

“My hope,” Meadows said during an Aug. 8 board of education meeting, “is that we will remain at that number above 5,000, so that, if anything, we’ll get some additional funding from the state and not have to [return funds.]”
