DA: Canonsburg couple charged with homicide in baby's death
Criminal homicide charges are being filed against the parents of a 3-month-old baby in connection with the infant's death, the Washington County District Attorney's office said Monday.
A preliminary hearing date for Shannon McKnight, 23, and James May, 31, has not been set.
Police say officers responded to the couple’s Canonsburg home Aug. 11 and found the baby wasn't breathing. She was taken to the hospital, where she later died.
"Through the investigation, toxicology results showed positive findings for fentanyl. A postmortem examination showed the infant died from fentanyl toxicity," District Attorney Jason Walsh said in a statement.
Pittsburgh's Action News 4 talked with Walsh on camera right after the announcement was made.
“Children are innocent. They are our most precious resource and they need to be protected. They are the most vulnerable members of society, and this office takes those cases very seriously and will seek justice for those victims,” Walsh said.
Police said they noticed vomit in the middle of the bed where the baby was lying and found suspected fentanyl and cocaine, as well as alleged drug paraphernalia in the house. The couple's other child, a 16-month-old boy, was taken to a children's hospital where cocaine and fentanyl were found in his system.
Pittsburgh's Action News 4 talked with a man who lives near the couple's home on First Street.
“There is always law enforcement stopping and knocking on the door, and no one would answer. They knew they were being looked for before any of this” Alan Repman said.
A picture of the baby, named Naveah, was posted on a GoFundMe page, set up by her father, James May, to cover funeral costs, but Walsh says McKnight and May disappeared after being seen at the hospital and went on the run for about a week.
“It’s like they were looking for money for running,” Repman said.
“It just shows their lack of care for the child. I mean, they didn't even show up for their own child's funeral,” Walsh said.
The couple was arrested about a week later.
“They were caught by my detectives and adult probation officers hiding in the rafters of a ceiling of a house,” Walsh said.
Before being charged with homicide, May and McKnight were first arrested on charges including child endangerment and drug possession. Both were being held in the county jail.
