Oconee County Deputies are asking for some public help in their search for a man accused of stealing a motorcycle, driving into Lake Hartwell at the end of a chase, and swimming away.
The bike had been swiped from a home on Timberlake One Circle early Monday. A deputy on patrol spotted it shortly before 3 AM Wednesday and tried to make a traffic stop. The rider sped away toward the subdivision's boat ramp and into the lake.
The deputy called for him to swim back, but the man struck out toward the Georgia shore instead , and that's the last anyone has seen of him. The motorcycle and the helmet the thief threw off have been recovered from the lake. The Sheriff's Office urges anyone who knows anything about the case to call investigators or Crimestoppers.
