Brightline construction brings more crossing closures and reroutes for Indian River County

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Brightline construction will cause more crossing closures and detours here for the next month as the railroad builds its passenger-rail service through the Treasure Coast.

As part of its $2.7 billion expansion of higher-speed rail from West Palm Beach to Orlando, Brightline plans to upgrade 32 railroad crossings in Indian River County.

Some of this month's closures have been extended by several days, according to Brightline, and the railroad crossing on Oslo Road will be closed in September. Here's when and where you can expect to encounter the latest closures:

Winter Beach

The crossing at 77th Street and Old Dixie Highway will remain closed until 7 p.m. Thursday. Detour information:

  • Eastbound 77th Street traffic will go north on 58th Avenue to 85th Street, east to U.S. 1, then south to 77th Street
  • Westbound 77th Street traffic will go north on U.S. 1 to 85th Street, west to 58th Avenue, then south to 77th Street
  • Southbound Old Dixie Highway traffic will go east on 81st Street to U.S. 1, south to 69th Street, then west to Old Dixie Highway
  • Northbound Old Dixie Highway traffic will go east on 69th Street to U.S. 1, north to 81st Street, then west to Old Dixie Highway

The crossing at 65th Street and Old Dixie Highway will be closed until 7 p.m. Saturday. Detour information:

  • Eastbound traffic will go north on 58th Avenue to 69th Street, west to U.S. 1, then south to 65th Street
  • Westbound traffic will go north on U.S. 1 to 69th Street, west to 58th Avenue, then south to 65th Street

Part of Old Dixie Highway, north of the 65th Street crossing, will remain closed through 7 p.m. Saturday. Detour information:

  • Southbound traffic will go east on 69th Street to U.S. 1, south to 57th Street, then west to Old Dixie Highway
  • Northbound traffic will go east on 57th Street to U.S. 1, north to 69th Street, then west to Old Dixie Highway

Vero Beach

The crossing at 49th Street and Old Dixie Highway will be closed 7 a.m. Aug. 19 through 7 p.m. Sept. 3. Detour Information:

  • Eastbound traffic will go south on 43rd Avenue to 45th Street, east to U.S. 1, then north to 49th Street
  • Westbound traffic will go south on U.S. 1 to 45th Street, west to 43rd Avenue, then north to 49th Street
  • Southbound traffic will go east on 53rd Street to U.S. 1, south to 45th Street, then west to Old Dixie Highway
  • Northbound traffic will go east on 45th Street to U.S. 1, north to 53rd Street, then west to Old Dixie Highway

The crossing at 16th Street and 17th Street will remain closed through 7 p.m., Aug. 28. Detour information: 

  • Eastbound traffic will go south on 20th Avenue to 12th Street, east to U.S. 1, then north to 16th Street and 17th Street
  • Westbound traffic will go south on U.S. 1 to 12th Street, west to 20th Avenue, then north to 16th Street and 17th Street

The crossing at Oslo Road will be closed 7 a.m. Sept. 7 through 7 p.m. Sept. 24. Detour information: 

  • Eastbound Oslo Road traffic will go north on Old Dixie Highway to 4th Street, east to U.S. 1, then south to Oslo Road
  • Westbound Oslo Road traffic will go north on U.S. 1 to 4th Street, west to Old Dixie Highway, then south to Oslo Road

Brightline construction will continue through 2022. Passenger service between West Palm Beach and Orlando is expected to begin next year.
