WESTFIELD - The Air National Guard’s 104th Fighter Wing at Barnes-Westfield Regional Airport is alerting area residents there may be additional flights beyond its normal operating hours, including both nights and weekends in the weeks ahead.

The additional operations “are in support of higher headquarters taskings and are not part of our normal training cycle,” said wing commander Col David Halasi-Kun.

“We are residents of the greater Westfield community and truly appreciate the continued support of our neighbors as it allows us to conduct our state and federal missions,” Halasi-Kun said.

The 104th Fighter Wing flies F-15C Eagle fighter jets with a primary mission of homeland defense for the northeastern United States. Its pilots sit alert on a 24-7 basis.

Base officials did not indicate when the additional operations will begin or when they will conclude.
