THE VICTIM TOLD POLICE HE WAS WALKING ALONG NORTH LIBERTY STREET WHEN HE WAS SHOT. TO START THE YEAR, WINSTON-SALEM WAS ON PACE TO SET A RECORD FOR HOMICIDES. BUT THOSE NUMBERS HAVE TAPERED OFF, INCLUDING A STRETCH OF MORE THAN 60 DAYS WITHOUT A MURDER. WXII 12’S FORD HATCHETT SPOKE WITH THE ASSISTANT CHIEF OF THE THEY THINK IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE DROP. REPORTER: WINSTON-SALEM POLICE ASSISTANT CHIEF WILLIAM PENN SAYS INCREASED PATROLS INSIDE CITY LIMITS THANKS TO A PARTNERSHIP WITH THE FORSYTH COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE HAVE HELPED SLOW SOME OF THE VIOLENT INCIDENTS. THROW IN THE ADDITIONS OF THE SHOTSPOTTER SYSTEM AND REAL TIME CRIME CENTER AND PENN FEELS THE LACK OF HOMICIDES THIS SUMMER ISN’T JUST A FLUKE. HE SAYS ONE OF THE MOST VALUABLE ASSETS THEY HAVE IS COMMUNITY MEMBERS COOPERATING WITH POLICE TO GET WOULD BE KILLERS OFF THE STREET BEFORE VIOLENCE CAN ESCALATE.
