An Earthquake Everyday for 7 Days is 7 Times More Than Usual

Stunning fact: Maine has had 7 earthquakes in the past week.

And only 49 in the entire 52 weeks prior to the last 7 days.

a more specific cause for the earthquake activity is not known.

Not known is a pretty telling answer.

Seismic activity in Maine is typical of the Appalachian region of northeastern North America. There is a low but steady rate of earthquake occurrence. The earthquakes are presumably caused by modern stress being released occasionally along zones of weakness in the earth's crust, but a more specific cause for the earthquake activity is not known. 

The latest earthquake, over 24 hours ago now, happened in Washington County, near Centerville. Just like the one before that. On Saturday the 13^th.

The takeaway. 7 in 7 days versus 49 in 365 days. At the very least disturbing. But what does one do differently?

A positive spin might be that if 42 more earthquakes hit Maine in the next 51 weeks, that’s the same pace from last year.
