Two teenagers involved in fatal head-on crash in Smith County

SMITH COUNTY, Texas (KETK) — One teenager is dead after a head-on crash at FM 346 and CR 122 before 5 p.m. in Smith County on Wednesday. A second teenage girl is reported to be in stable condition, according to officials.

Two vehicles were involved in the wreck at FM 346 and CR 122 before 5 p.m.

A Hyundai Tucson and Toyota RAV4 collided after officials with DPS said the RAV4 left the roadway to the right, overcorrected and crossed into the eastbound lane and struck the Tucson, according to a preliminary investigation.

The driver of the Tucson, Molly Reck, 18 of Tyler, was pronounced dead on the scene. The driver of the RAV4, a 16-year-old female was taken to a local hospital and is reported to be in stable condition.

“Whitehouse ISD sends our love and prayers to the Reck family and to everyone involved in that tragic event,” said Whitehouse ISD Superintendent Dr. Christopher Moran. “We’re praying for them and we’ll wrap our arms around them and care for them in the days ahead.”

Donna Carter, Whitehouse business owner and resident, says this stretch of road has been an ongoing problem. Many Whitehouse parents worry about their children driving down FM 346.

“Over the years there has been many wrecks on that curve and even before that curve… just that road in general. When you get to that curve, it is kind of a blind spot and so it’s really hard to navigate especially if it’s been raining or snow (which we rarely get), but those moments and at night you can’t see. It is almost a blind curve as you come around the corner and stuff. It’s scary even as an adult who’s been driving for many years, imagine a kid that’s only driven a couple of times if at all.”

All of FM 346 was shut down. DPS was on the scene as well as the Flint-Gresham Fire Department and the Smith County Fire Marshal.
