NEW PHILADELPHIA — A 19-year-old Carrollton woman pleaded guilty on Wednesday to vehicular manslaughter in connection with a traffic crash that resulted in the death of her passenger, 40-year-old Nichole L. Hunt of Canton. The deceased was the aunt of the driver.

New Philadelphia Municipal Judge Nanette DeGarmo VonAllman found Alexis N. Snair guilty of the charge and sentenced her to 10 days in jail, which is to be served on a work crew. The defendant is to perform 100 hours of community service and pay a $750 fine and court costs. The judge suspended her driver's license for a year, but said she could apply for privileges to drive to work and court-ordered service.

Assistant city prosecutor Christopher Rice dropped a charge of failing to obey a stop sign as part of a plea agreement negotiated with the defense.

The collision occurred on the afternoon of Dec. 12 on state Route 212 at New Cumberland Road NE in Warren Township.

According to a report from a trooper with the New Philadelphia Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Snair was southbound in a 2012 Subaru Legacy on New Cumberland Road when she failed to yield at a stop sign at the intersection with Route 212.

Her vehicle was hit by a 2016 Ford Escape driven by a 73-year-old Navarre woman, who was traveling eastbound on Route 212.

Both vehicles traveled off the south edge of the road and came to rest in a field.

Hunt graduated from Malvern High School and had worked as a social worker in several local battered women’s shelters, according to her obituary.
