LEE COUNTY, Ala. (WSFA/Gray News) - A suspect was arrested Wednesday in connection with three shootings along Interstate 85 in Alabama and Georgia.

One of the drivers who was shot was flown to a hospital in critical condition. A motive remains unclear, WSFA reported.

According to the Troup County, Georgia, Sheriff’s Office, Jerel Raphael Brown, 39, of Montgomery, was arrested in east Alabama around 12:15 p.m. when a Chambers County deputy spotted the suspect’s vehicle near the county courthouse in LaFayette.

Multiple law enforcement agencies had been on the look out for the white 1996 Fleetwood Cadillac sedan, of which authorities had captured an image, including its license plate.

Brown is facing multiple charges, including aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and first-degree criminal damage in Troup County.

Auburn Police have since confirmed Brown, whom it reported as being 45, is being held without bond at the Lee County Jail on charges of attempted murder and shooting into an occupied motor vehicle.

More charges are possible as the investigation continues, the department said.

Multiple agencies are involved in the investigation including Auburn Police Department, Troup County Sheriff’s Office in Georgia, Montgomery Police Department, Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the FBI, according to a news release.

Police in Auburn, Alabama, said they responded to the area of Interstate 85 northbound between mile markers 56 and 57 Wednesday around 6:15 a.m. There were reports that a vehicle was stopped in the road, and another motorist gave the victim aid before first responders arrived.

Once on the scene, officers found the driver, a 45-year-old man, suffering from a life-threatening gunshot wound. Authorities said a shot had been fired into the rear of the man’s vehicle. The victim was flown by helicopter in critical condition to a Montgomery, Alabama, hospital.

Police are working to determine if the shooting is related to a shooting the same day at 7:56 a.m. near Interstate 85 in Troup County, Georgia. According to WTVM, that incident involved a man who was reportedly shot at while driving on the interstate. The victim was not injured.

Details on a third Interstate 85 shooting, confirmed by police as part of the ongoing investigation, have not been released. Law enforcement officials say the incident happened in the Montgomery Police Department’s jurisdiction.

Montgomery Police have since confirmed a shooting incident Wednesday morning in the area of Atlanta Highway in which a woman reported her vehicle was damaged by gunfire. No one was injured.

MPD has confirmed Brown is the suspect in that incident.
