2 more Wayne County residents' deaths attributed to COVID complications

RICHMOND, Ind. — While Wayne County has seen a decrease in COVID-19 case levels, two more deaths from COVID-19 complications have been reported.

The two deaths occurred July 21 and Aug. 6, according to Indiana State Department of Health day-by-day totals updated Monday. There have now been 336 Wayne County residents to die from COVID complications since March 2020.

Of those who have died, 176 have been women and 160 have been men. Just fewer than half, 161 at 47.9%, have been age 80 or older, with 92, another 27.4%, in their 70s. There also have been 54 people in the 60s, 18 in their 50s, six in their 40s, four in their 30s and one in the 20s who have died.

Other surrounding counties also saw their death tolls rise. Like Wayne County, Preble County, Ohio, reported two additional deaths, while Randolph, Henry and Fayette counties each reported one additional death.

Reid Health on Monday reported 15 patients in COVID-19 containment areas, including one in intensive care. That's an increase of one patient from its Aug. 8 report.

Overall, Wayne County has now reported 20,892 laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 cases; however, the case rate has decreased during August.

After there were 954 July cases, there have so far been 270 during August, although the past seven days' totals are considered preliminary. The Aug. 1-7 total of 185 cases is a 26.0% drop from the 250 cases the last week of July.

Each of the final three weeks of July saw more than 200 Wayne County cases reported, topped by the 255 cases July 18-24.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention list Wayne and Fayette counties as having medium community levels of COVID-19. Randolph, Henry, Franklin, Darke and Preble counties have community levels of COVID-19, and Union County is listed at the low level.

The overall case and death totals for surrounding counties are:

  • Darke County: 13,544 positives and 242 deaths;
  • Fayette County: 7,402 positives and 145 deaths;
  • Henry County: 14,370 positives and 232 deaths;
  • Franklin County: 4,701 positives and 57 deaths;
  • Preble County: 10,353 positives and 202 deaths;
  • Randolph County: 6,379 positives and 148 deaths;
  • Union County: 2,132 positives and 21 deaths.

Indiana has recorded 1,862,813 laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 cases and 23,263 COVID-related deaths through Sunday. The Ohio Department of Health's weekly update Thursday reported 3,002,043 cases and 39,220 deaths.
