A property owner shot and killed an alleged burglar during a struggle over a gun.
The Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office said the incident occurred Tuesday morning at approximately 6:20 in Pear Orchard, a rural community near the West Virginia state line, when deputies responded to a report of shots fired related to a possible burglary.
Upon arriving at the scene, a witness told deputies that one of the burglary suspects, 45-year-old Jerry Lee Maynard, of Lawrence County, had been found in a wooded area by the armed property owner.
Maynard disarmed the property owner and a struggle over the gun ensued. During that struggle, Maynard suffered a fatal gunshot wound, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the Lawrence County Coroner’s Office.
Upon further investigation, a warrant for a second burglary suspect, 42-year-old Green Ramey, also of Lawrence County, was issued. He was located and arrested and lodged in the Big Sand Regional Detention Center where he’s been charged with second-degree burglary.
The incident remains under investigation.
