A driver fatally hit a man crossing the street in Albia, according to the Iowa State Patrol.

The pedestrian, 56-year-old Timothy Allen Olson of Polk City, was taken to the hospital and later died.

A 33-year-old Albia man driving a Chevy Traverse SUV hit Olson as he was crossing the intersection of South Clinton Street and Washington Avenue East in downtown Albia around 1:10 p.m. on Tuesday, according to a State Patrol accident report.

The driver, who was driving south on South Clinton Street, did not see the pedestrian, the report says. Olson was crossing South Clinton Street in the crosswalk from the west and to the right of the SUV, the report says.

The Des Moines Register is not printing the driver’s name in line with its coverage guidelines.
