Aldermen Reject Resolution Seeking Zoning Change For Cannabis Craft Grow Businesses

Springfield aldermen have rejected a resolution that could have led to a zoning change allowing craft grow cannabis operations to locate in closer proximity to homes, schools or day cares.

The resolution, which was rejected with six aldermen voting “no,” would have asked the Planning and Zoning Commission to conduct a hearing on changing the current requirement. The change would have allowed a craft grow operation within 200 feet of homes or 500 feet from a school or day care, instead of the current 15-hundred feet.

The attorneys for District 186 sent a letter to aldermen Tuesday asking them to reject the change, suggesting that there are “obvious” reasons to keep such facilities away from schools. But the companies seeking to locate here insist their operations would pose no threat to schools or homes… and they say without the zoning change, they will be forced to look for locations outside the city.
