TERRIFYING MOMENTS FOR DEPUTIES BEFORE THEY HAD TO CALL IN BACK UP AS A DEPUTY AND BYSTANDER WERE SHOT. MEGHAN: WELL, IT ALL STARTED WHEN RACHEL CLAY BROKE OUT OF HANDCUFFS AND GAINED ACCESS TO A DEPUTY’S RIFLE. BODY WORN CAMERA FROM DEPUTIES SHOW WHAT LED UP TO IT AND PROMPTED THAT STANDOFF YOU CAN SEE RACHEL TRYING TO BREAK OUT OF THE HANDCUFFS. THEY WERE FIRST CALLED BECAUSE OF A WOMAN ACTING ERRATIC. SHE NOW HAD METH IN HER SYSTEM. >> IT TOOK HER TIME TO OPERATE THE GUN. SHE WAS FRANTIC. MEGHAN: AFTER SHAKING FREE, SHE GETS HER HAND ON A DEPUTY’S RIFLE. [GUNSHOT] >> OW. MEGHAN: FIRING 10 ROUNDS FROM THE SQUAD CAR. >> WE HAVE SHOTS FIRED. START EMS. WE NEED BACKUP. MEGHAN: CAN HEAR THE 10 ROUNDS FIRED. [RAPID GUNFIRE] >> WHAT? DID YOU GET OUT OF HER HANDCUFFS? YOUR DAD IS HIT. >> I HAD TWO DEPUTIES ON SCENE THAT WERE TREATED WITH THE HOMEOWNER’S DAD BEHIND ONE OF THE UNITS. >> HE GOT HIT. >> DAD, ARE YOU OK? MEGHAN: THE DEPUTY AND BYSTANDER ARE OK. THE DEPUTY, KEITH WILLIAMS, RETURNED TO WORK MONDAY. >> DO THIS 35 YEARS AND THIS IS A FIRST FOR ME. UNTIL THEY GET ONE OF THE GUNS AND SHOOT FROM THE CAR. The Grady County Sheriff's Office released body camera video showing the intense moments leading up to a six-hour standoff Friday after a woman shot a deputy and a bystander.| MORE | Grady County officials consider changes after woman shoots deputy with his own gunGrady County deputies were called to the scene Friday morning near County Street 2960 and Quail Haven Road because of a woman acting erratically. Authorities said the suspect, Racheal Clay, had meth in her system."It took her about 15, 20 minutes to figure out how to operate the gun. She was pushing buttons. She was frantic," Grady County undersheriff Gary Boggess said.After shaking free of the shackles, Clay got her hands on a deputy's rifle and fired 10 rounds from the patrol car. Deputies were confused, wondering how she got the rifle."Did she get out of her cuffs?" a deputy could be heard asking.She did. "A ricochet actually hit our deputy, grazed him in the back of the neck, and then, what we're figuring is a piece of shrapnel, or the bullet, hit the homeowner's dad in the chest," Boggess said.The two deputies then called in for backup."I had two deputies on scene, which they both were treated with the homeowner's dad behind one of our other units," Boggess said.| MORE | Deputy shot in Grady County standoff situation returns to work The deputy and bystander are OK. The deputy, Keith Williams, returned to work Monday. "I've been doing this for 35 years, and this is the first for me seeing someone get one of our guns and shoot from the car," Boggess said.The woman was arrested on intent to kill charges.The Grady County Sheriff's Office is looking to change security measures inside their vehicles to prevent something like this from happening again.
